The TFFV has a primary focus of providing advocacy and generating public awareness in their work to end domestic violence. During this past year, over 6,500 clients utilized the organizations’ resources. There are several programs and services that have been designed to educate and provide understanding and assistance including:
Courthouse Advocacy
The advocates in the Restraining Order Clinic located at the Milwaukee County Courthouse help people who have experienced abuse file restraining orders. They explain the process,
help them to fill out the paperwork, accompany them to court, and help to find shelter,
counseling or other services.
Legal Emergency Assistance Program (LEAP)
LEAP advocates help clients develop safety plans, as well as referring them to other community resources. This includes food, clothing, housing, health care, counseling services and job referrals. They also provide quick legal information and referrals; including an eligibility assessment for free emergency legal services through a partnership with Legal Action of Wisconsin.
Children’s Advocacy Program
This program provides help to protective parents of children who have been the victims of physical or sexual abuse or who have witnessed domestic violence in their homes. The Children’s Advocacy Program addresses the needs of children and assists parents with safety planning. TFFV staff in this program provides support and advocacy, as well as information and referrals for counseling, shelter, legal and other issues.
Ending Violence through Education (EVE)
EVE provides gender-specific education and support to women with a history of sexual and/or physical abuse. EVE also houses the Task Force’s prevention programming. Specific course offerings include: 1) support groups for survivors (offered in Spanish, English, and Russian); 2) intervention classes for female and same-sex abusers; 3) parenting classes for non-offending parents (offered in conjunction with the Child Witness to Domestic Violence Project); 4) family-strengthening and prevention classes offered in partnership with the Wisconsin Humane Society.
